TALA — Grace Beverley

Nobody likes wearing someone’s old athletic wear, especially if it’s leggings or undergarments. That’s just gross. Well, Grace Beverley thought the same thing. With a passion for sustainability, Beverley thrifted a lot and tried to buy from sustainable brands. She noticed that plenty of sustainable brands existed for most clothing. But not for athletic wear. And since nobody likes thrifting someone’s old, sweaty socks or leggings, Beverley decided to create a brand herself. Her company, TALA, creates styles made from plastic bottles and factory offcuts, making it sustainable and ethical, two things she feels very passionately about.

Originally, Beverley was a music major at Oxford University. But when she realized she had a passion for sustainable clothing, she took to a different side of the creativity spectrum: Entrepreneurship. She wanted people, specifically young people, to have a sustainable option for their athletic clothes that wouldn’t also drain their bank accounts. And so, TALA was born in 2019. Beverley stuck to her passion and through TALA, she managed to recycle seventy-thousand water bottles in her first year alone.

But TALA isn’t Beverley’s only business. She has also started a fitness app called SHREDDY which offers her activewear customers (and anyone else) a place to set goals and track their fitness progress. And if that’s not enough, she is also the Sunday Times bestselling author of “Working Hard, Hardly Working,” a book that seeks to teach young entrepreneurs how to accomplish more under less stress.

When asked about her “eureka” moment, Grace Beverley stated that she never had one, that it was more of a build-up of idea after idea. And I think this is the perfect example of the slow hunch, the idea that starts as a seed and grows. Grace Beverley and the invention of TALA started as a hunch and is now a multimillion dollar business that encourages people to stay fit and recycle.

Lily Born

One of the most fundamental skills an entrepreneur can posses is the ability to see a problem, want to fix it, and create a solution. That’s exactly what Lily Born, then aged 7, did. She noticed the effects Parkinson’s Disease had on her grandfather. Easily knocked over cups caused spills and messes that often cause damage to other items in the house, be it a computer or paperwork, and extra work for grandma to clean up. After a bit of experimentation, and a few prototypes, Lily created the Kangaroo cup, a durable, ceramic cup featuring three stabilizing legs. The now 16 year-old has produced and sold tens of thousands of cups around the world.

Lily’s story is not just one of innovation, but courage. Before launching her company Imagiroo, Lily was a timid and shy girl who balked at even the idea of ordering food for herself at a restaurant. Her desire to help people and inspire others to create impact in the world helped her overcome her anxieties and reach higher than she even anticipated.

Cory Nieves is a young entrepreneur who’s business aims to make the world better for everyone he knows through treats! This business started because Cory told his mother Lisa that he was tired of taking the bus to school; he wanted to buy a car. He began selling hot cocoa to raise money in his town Englewood, New Jersey. Once his mother saw his dedication to his new business, she encouraged Cory to continue selling hot cocoa to save money for college. To raise this money, Cory began selling lemonade and cookies to expand his options for his customers. Cory and Lisa have spent months creating original cookie recipes and learning how to bake. Cory’s Cookies are made with all natural ingredients. Cory has expanded his line from the original Chocolate Chip Cookie to Double Dark, Oatmeal Raisin, and Sugar. Cory has been able to work with some of the nation’s leading companies and brands. Some of these brands include, Aetna, Barney’s, Bloomingdales, Citibank, J.Crew, Macy’s, Whole Foods, and more. Cory has also worked with nonprofits like Bergen’s Promise in Rochelle Park, New Jersey, and Children’s Aid Society in New York City.

Ornament Anchors

One day, after one particularly special Christmas ornament fell off their tree and broke, the Naqvi brothers began to consider how to better hand their ornaments. After all, the flimsy, silly hooks weren’t really cutting it! And thus, the Ornament Anchor was born.

Originally invented for his school’s invention convention, 10 year old Ayaan Naqvi created the idea for Ornament Anchor when he was in 4th grade. Coming from an entrepreneurial family, Ayaan knew he’d found something special when he was flooded with adult’s interest in purchasing his Ornament Anchors. Ayaan went on to win first place in his classroom and now, with the help of his older brother, Mickey, 15, and Mom, Amanda, he’s bringing Ornament Anchor into the hands of consumers everywhere.

Not only does Ayaan posses a strong entrepreneurial spirit, but he also cares and loves animals. In honor of his dog, Zara, a rescue from a shelter, a potion of the Ornament Anchor proceeds go directly to animal shelters. In his own words, his goal is “to help as many animals in need as [he] can” and hopefully, eventually, branch out to help other endangered species. This past year, Ornament Anchor was able to donate $20,000 dollars to shelters and animals in need.

A New Angle on Gun Safety

Suicide is a genuine problem and only becomes more of one as America gets more and more depressed. Kai Kloepfer, an engineer-minded, high school student, noticed the increasing rate of suicide in America, suicide often by guns. So to increase gun safety, decrease accidental harm and harm done due to gun theft, Kloepfer envisioned a smart gun, a special weapon that recognizes its owner.

While on the search for a science fair project, a major shooting happened less than an hour from Kloepfer’s home and it sparked an idea. And so, for a little less than a year, Kloepfer worked tirelessly to develop a smart gun, a gun that would recognize the fingerprint of its owner and would only fire if he or she was holding it. He took this project to multiple science fairs and walked away as the winner of all of them. And after applying for the Smart Tech Challenge, he was able to nail down a $50,000 grant to continue his smart-gun technology. Between graduating from high school and starting college, Kloepfer finally established Biofire Technologies, his very own startup that integrates fingerprint identification into guns.

It is inspiring how Kloepfer worked to use the vast technological advances of the twenty-first century to help increase gun safety and slow the suicide epidemic. Though this idea cannot halt gun harm entirely, it can help and is a great way to tackle a problem without also tackling the politics surrounding it. He really found a way to solve an issue without fanning the flames of that issue.

Marques Brownlee – Growth With Technology

Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) is a technology YouTuber that started posting videos in high school reviewing pieces of tech. However, his channel did not see significant growth until college. There, he made videos in his dorm room between school work and found money to purchase products to review. He has always heavily emphasized quality in his videos from the sets to videography to audio. His biggest breakthrough was having the opportunity to interview Kobe Bryant.

Today, Marques has multiple channels and over ten people on his team. He has divided everything involved in creating content to different people to ensure the highest quality work. Currently, he has his main channel, the Studio channel, a YT Shorts channel, a podcast channel, and an Auto Focus channel. The Studio channel focuses on behind the scenes and activity in the studio, and Auto Focus is a car review channel that he started recently.

On top of these, Marques plays ultimate frisbee professionally. Not only is he one of the best on his team, but they recently won the championship. Somehow, he finds time to be a great athlete while making lots of content weekly.

Marques has a big influence on so many people with his entrepreneurial mind. His drive and determination to do what he loves is present and impactful. Seeing the level of success he has seen on YouTube while playing ultimate professionally is not seen anywhere else. While his channels have grown, he has began to outsource the work to more employees. It is crazy to see that YouTube, along with sponsorships and others, have been able to pay him and allow him to have a big studio with over ten full time employees. His work is noticed and inspires me to do what I love.

Zandra Cunningham – Zandra Beauty

When Zandra Cunningham nine, her father wouldn’t let her buy more lip balm because of the harmful skin-damaging chemicals found in it. So Zandra made her own. Almost a year later, in 2010, Zandra launched a brand called Azariah’s Innocence, and at age 10, sold her own lip balm and body shea butter at the local farmer’s market.

As business grew and the brand expanded, Zandra renamed her brand to Zandra Beauty. Her brand still would sell lip balm made with natural ingrediants, but now she would sell more things than lip balm and shea butter, such as make up remover and face washes. As Zandra puts it, the brand motto is “No icky stuff!”

Now at age 21, Zandra has a net worth of $500,000. Her brand has expanded to making over 40 natural skincare products, all of which are not tested on animals. Not only did Zandra win awards such as the Etsy Open Call Golden PO, BE Teenpreneur of the year nominee (2016), and Small Business Administration Youth Entrepreneur of the year (2017), but she has also been featured on talk shows and other channels such as Nickelodeon.

A few words of advice Zandra has given are “be confident” and “networking is key.” The reason why Zandra’s story is inspirational is because of how young she was when she started her business, yet she wasn’t afraid of conquering the world with her skincare products. Zandra’s attitude is part of why she is such a successful entrepreneur. You can’t be afraid to change the world.

Mo’s Bows

Moziah is the creator of Mo’s Bows. A company which has now sold over seven hundred thousand dollars of merchandise and even got invited to the white house to give a bow to President Barack Obama! Now how exactly did Moziah get there? Well at age nine Mo was struggling to find a tie that matched exactly how he wanted it to for an event he would be attending. Mos’s grandmother taught him to sew bow ties out of fabrics left over from her sewing projects. One day Mo decided to put this knowledge to work to make the perfect bow tie for the event he was going to. At the event he received a plethora of compliments on his tie which got him to thinking. If so, many people liked my tie I’m sure some would be willing to purchase one.  Just like that the journey of Mo’s Bows began. After Moziah started his business, it began to quickly grow. He hired a tailor to work for him and managed the creative side of his company. Moziah was ready to take the next step with Mo’s Bows and decided to pitch his company on Shark Tank. At just twelve years old at the time Mo was able to get a deal with investor Daymond John. Since then, Moziah’s company has grown immensely. You are now able to find Mo’s Bows in retail stores all throughout the United States. Mo went on to be inducted into the Tennessee Museum, Costume and textile institute in 2014. He also was a fashion correspondent for the 2015 NBA Draft, in 2016 Moziah was on Fortune’s “18 under 18” list of most Innovative and ambitious teens throughout the country, as well as Time’s “30 most influential teens” winner. Arguably the most impressive accomplishment of them all, Moziah was invited to the White House to participate in the Inaugural What House Demo Day where he was able to meet President Barack Obama and gift him a special Mo’s Bow in the color “Obama Blue”. Moziah’s vision and passion for his business took him leaps and bounds. He serves as a great role model to young entrepreneurs everywhere

Destiny Snow

Destiny Snow is a very successful young entrepreneur who owns the business called SnowGlam collection. This is an online company that sells beauty products to women. One thing that stood out to me was how she handled the COVID situation regarding her business. Constantly being stuck at home made her realize that she needed to focus on growing her company. She did this by the help of a social media influencer named Ari Fletcher. She tagged her on her Instagram story, and Destiny instantly saw how big of an impact that had on her business. She said her phone started blowing up with orders as soon as Ari posted on her story and that was the spark her business needed. I thought this was a very clever of way of getting exposure. It was pretty much genius as it immediately reached her target marker which are primarily teenage girls who love to shop. Another thing that I found really impressive was the number of sales she had for her online business. It was an astounding amount of over one million dollars over the course of two years. If Destiny keeps working the way she is and utilizing social media, I think she still has more room for growth and expansion. The most inspiring part of this story was how she used COVID to help strive her business to where she is at today. Instead of letting the pandemic hold her business back, she optimized this as an opportunity to really focus on social media as her main way of connecting to her customers.

How Success Happened for Destiny Snow, CEO of SnowGlam Collection

Shamari Walker – AscuniaTechLLC

Shamari Walker founded his company at age 15. Originally intended to showcase his development skills and make peoples lives easier, Walker’s company began as a small, local company that has since grown into AscuniaTech LLC, nationally organization. AscuniaTech LLC is a launchpad for prospective developers, the company works to help them through the software development, hardware development, website development, tech support, customer satisfaction, promotional processes. He has also founded a separate organization focused on teaching Computer Science to highschoolers in his city for free.

Not only did Walker found AscuniaTech LLC while in highschool, he was a particularly involved and accomplished student. His titles included varsity chess player, football and baseball technician, and trumpet and baritone player. Balancing such a busy schedule in addition to running a company and attending conferences likely was not easy, making his academic achievements that much more impressive. Somehow, Walker maintained a 4.01 GPA average and received funding to cover a full ride to Purdue University where he is now a senior.

Walker’s story is particularly impactful as the journey of someone overcoming their circumstances, finding their talents, and utilizing them to help others not just themselves. Each of his products seems to encourage connection and fostering encouragement between people, something that is often overlooked in a hyperactive, modern society.
