Alexander Kulitski – The Teenage Software Entrepreneur

As a college student, Alexander Kulitski recognized the opportunity to innovate the software and web application industry, specifically in smaller businesses and international enterprises. This is how he developed Smart IT which had quick success and profit. One of the projects Alexander and his team worked on was the first online ticket sales service, which is still the most popular service in the country.

Alexander got the idea for the business through the knowledge he gained from participating in an IT club which lead him to freelance work. As a freshman in college, Alexander was earning good income and had a great reputation as a freelancer. He ran a blog and would get multiple work offers a day. Realizing he had some savings to spend, he decided to hire some of his friends to help him keep up with his growing work and rent an office space. This was the beginning of Smart IT.

The entrepreneurial spirit Alexander possesses drives his business on a day to day basis and he is excited to be engaged in how automation is changing our world. He has found purpose in his desire to be part of technology that is changing the world at rapid paces. Alexander values many different methods to help him stay focused and productive day in and day out such as sports, yoga, vacations, and meditation. Curiosity goes hand in hand with these productivity methods due to the industry of technology having such a rapidly changing nature. Alexander is dedicated to being diligent even if something doesn’t work at first. He values quality over quantity, giving your all into everything, and facing the tough decisions head on.

I very much admire Alexander’s entrepreneurial traits that demonstrate his passion for business and technology. He is not afraid to take on a project that is difficult, as long as he follows through and gives it his all no matter what. Even from a young age, Alexander pondered how he could transform his passions into a business that could make a difference, and now he has found great success in doing so.

Trey Brown’s Spergo

At just 12 years old, Trey Brown started his entrepreneurial journey. Trey started by using $178 to buy shirts that he customized and sold. This purchase was the start of something much bigger for Trey.

Spergo, Trey’s company, sells customized socks, t-shirts, hoodies, and sweatpants. The company was started with the help of Sherell Peterson, Trey’s mother, who is a seamstress. She now helps run the business with Trey.

Like many businesses, the name Spergo has a meaning to Trey. He says it is a combination of sports, heroes, and go-getters. This name was crafted after Trey decided he wanted to help the kids in his community escape the violence and drugs they were surrounded with. With Spergo, Trey hopes to serve as an inspiration to the kids around him which makes his business have a great value to his community.

Trey got a $25,000 grant that helped kickstart his business to a larger scale. He was able to move from selling shirts door-to-door to a brick-and-mortar store. He then expanded to a total of three stores. Trey’s most recent endeavor was going on Shark Tank where he received $300,000 for 20% stake in his company. He hopes to expand more with this money.

Trey is an impressive young entrepreneur. He has the charisma to sell his product and get people to financially support his business endeavors. This charm will allow him to keep growing and become more successful in the future. He is also ambitious. By starting so young, he is setting himself up for a life of success in whatever adventure he chooses next. His goals are also impressive. He wants to change the future for the kids around him which makes him inspiring. At such a young age, he realizes that changes need to be made in order to provide a better future for those around him. Trey possess many key qualities that an entrepreneur needs to have to succeed and his plans for the future show he is ready to keep going.

Ultimately, Trey Brown is a great example of a young entrepreneur because he is not afraid to go out there and do the work to succeed.

Eli Zied Spreads a Positive Message

Eli Zied is the founder of the clothing brand Habits 365. Eli has the mind of an entrepreneur from a very young age. When he was 12, he started buying and reselling sneakers which then eventually lead him into the clothing industry. At the age of 15 Eli started a few different streetwear lines that eventually formed his brand Habits 365. Eli said that one way he learned was following and watching what other companies were doing. He would watch what other companies would do on social media and started developing ideas of his own by taking what he saw other brands doing and adding his own ideas into the mix.

Eli’s motivation for Habits 365 came from his passion to create a lifestyle brand. Meaning a brand that had more of a social impact that promoted a positive way of life. He wanted to draw people’s attention to their habits and remind them how important it is to have good habits. Since these are things, you do every single day he wanted to remind people that bad ones can have a huge negative effect in their lives, and they should try to change bad habits into good ones.

Eli started designing the brand logo, clothing designs, and took to social media to start building his brand presence. Eli really took a leading role in the startup of his business, and I think this shows great entrepreneur characteristics. He tackled each piece of the puzzle that came up and successfully created a brand with a positive reputation that represents his original message well. Habits 365 started to spread by word of mouth and social media and any other ways Eli could get the name of his brand out there. Today Habits 365 is still doing well and Eli has not stopped developing and improving his brand into something unique and special. I think it is cool to see a young entrepreneur doing his best to spread such a positive message.

Anthony Casalena, Founder of Squarespace

Squarespace Founder Is A Billionaire Ahead Of Direct ListingAnthony Casalena founded Squarespace after noticing the difficulties of building a website. He was a web designer himself, having a familiarity with technologies such as HTML, Java, and CSS. He thought he could make the process more accessible, enabling anyone to make their own website. While being a student at the University of Maryland, Casalena started building Squarespace. It started as and still is, a drag-and-drop website builder.

Casalena’s beginnings as an entrepreneur are similar to that of Mark Zuckerburg. Both started technology startups in college and gained considerable success. Like Facebook, Casalena has led Squarespace to gain a large following and even a place on the stock market. Squarespace has allowed thousands of businesses to build their own website, eCommerce stores, and blogs. To date, Squarespace is hosting over a million websites. This makes it one of the largest website platforms in its industry.

A unique feature of Squarespace is its pre-built designs and all-in-one solutions. Although there are competitors that operate similarly, Squarespace websites are distinctive. Animations and colors are minimalistic. They can also be implemented rather quickly. Previously, building your own website led to a poorly poor product. Squarespace has enhanced this process, allowing users to more beautiful and complete designs. Casalena has mentioned this, stating:

I believe that minimalism is a process. It’s not an aesthetic. It’s not black and white. It’s the thoughtfulness that goes into creating these things.

More recently, Casalena is working on expanding Squarespace by acquiring other startups. The most notable acquisitions by Squarespace have been Tock, a reservation application, and Acuity, a scheduling utility. This shows Squarespace’s goal of making an all-in-all tool for business owners and their online presence.

Overall, Casalena shows how a business can take on multiple markets, have humble beginnings, and be known for its design.

Garrett Gee – The Scanning Millionaire

Garrett Gee is one of the founders of Scan Inc., a company focused on the QR code industry from a new and innovative angle. The company began out of an idea Garrett and his classmates came up with for a project in his entrepreneurship course at BYU. They decided to put their idea into action, which ended up making them millionaires. Scan is a downloadable app that allows people to make their own QR codes that can link to more than just a website. It also allows you to scan a barcode to check a price on an item. With a wider variety of codes you can scan, this company was immediately very popular to multiple large investors. The app blew up as soon as Garrett and his team launched it, and he went on Shark Tank to pitch his idea. Although he did not secure a deal with a shark, the additional publicity for his business only made it that much more popular. Garrett ended up selling Scan Inc. to Snapchat for $54 million.

These young and successful entrepreneurs are perfect examples of true innovators. They saw that the QR code system had more potential than it was being used for, so they decided to do something about it. Although they very well could have moved on from this idea, especially since it was an idea for their class, I am inspired by their follow through with the project. I am especially inspired by Garrett because he demonstrated his determination throughout the building of the company through his passion and drive to “connect the real world with the digital universe”.

I have learned that we have the power to “change the world from our college dorm rooms”, as Garrett said. With technology advancing, it could be any second that a million dollar idea comes to us. When approaching innovation, it is important not to limit yourself by self doubt because the world truly is at our fingertips.

Trisha Prabhu: ReThink-ing Online Hate

Trisha Prabhu is a 21-year-old social entrepreneur and the founder of ReThink, a patented technology that detects and stops online hate. In the fall of 2013, Trisha, then only 13 years old, read the shocking story of Rebecca Sedwick’s suicide. Rebecca, after being cyberbullied for over a year and a half, took her own life at only 12 years old. As a victim of bullying herself, Trisha felt heartbroken and horrified. In that moment, she decided to no longer be a bystander and created ReThink, which detects online hate at the source before bullying occurs.

Trisha has received worldwide acclaim for her endeavors. In 2016, former President Barack Obama invited to Trisha to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit to share her story with other entrepreneurs. Bella is a busy kid entrepreneur, but she still allots time to give back. She started the “Owlettes Initiative” in which she personally mentors young aspiring entrepreneurs ages 12-17. Bella shares tips with these kids and any advice from her success story. I think this part of her business is truly inspiring because she found a way to help others as well as keep up a successful business.

Bella says the best part of being a kid entrepreneur is, “…being able to encourage kids of all ages to not be afraid to reach for their dreams and never let anyone tell them they’re not good enough or their idea isn’t good enough.” Bella’s business Origami Owl not only lets people express themselves through their jewelry but inspires young entrepreneurs to take the risk to start making something they are passionate about become big.

Miracle Olatunji: Helping Students Discover their Passion

The evolution of OpportuniMe, and founder Miracle Olatunji - Technical.ly DelawareMiracle Olatunji is the founder of an OpportuniMe, a platform to connect high schools with opportunities for career development. She started it as a high school student. Olatunji created OpporuntiMe because she wanted to “democratize the process of helping people find opportunities.” Though she knew such programs existed, they were typically too obscure to discover. Olatunji gained her passion for OpportuniMe when she participated in the University of Delaware’s Diamond Challenge. This competition allowed her to see the power of entrepreneurship and how it can be used to instigate fruitful change. Olatunji wanted to start OpportuniMe as soon and as simple as possible; hence, it began as a newsletter. She is now working towards a website that will provide even more resources.

Olatunji is an admirer of social entrepreneurship. As such, she is working on another project called MIRACLE. Although MIRACLE is her first name, each letter represents something unique: Making Impacts, Raising Awareness, and Creating Learning Experiences. She states, “The vision is to create this organization, and under the umbrella of the organization would be social enterprises that meet the goal of creating and launching social ventures that empower, enlighten and educate people.”

Olatunji’s mission for students is clear: discover your passion, execute, and make a difference. She also wants young entrepreneurs to be ambitious, refusing to let their age or background limit them. Olatunji tries to encourage this by adopting Steven Johnson’s idea of a “liquid network,” which permits ideas to collide, connect, and evolve. This idea is evident in her effort to connect students with mentorship and other entrepreneurs. In a Forbes article, she shared: “You can’t really take an idea off the ground without collaborating with people and having mentors.”

Clearly, Olatunji values social entrepreneurship. Her investment in students shows her appreciation of guidance and how anyone, regardless of their age, can be innovative.

Sofi Overton – Founder of Wise Pocket

New Kids on the Block: Wise Pocket ProductsSofia had first found the inspiration for her company when she had witnessed her older cousin put her phone in her boot because she didn’t have any pockets in her leggings to hold it. Since her cousin was older and was an influence to Sofia, she decided she would follow her footsteps and try it out too. As you would imagine it was very uncomfortable. Ever since that day when Sofia was only 11 years old, she has wanted to make life easier for active kids and better for kids in need.

Sofia had made her first prototype by adding a pocket at the top of a sock, one that would be big enough to place a phone in. The idea was working great and her customers were loving the product, but Sofia was not going to stop there. She has also now created leggings of her own that have pockets large enough to hold your smartphone.
