Steven Crowder – The Conservative Canadian-American

Image result for steven crowderAs a teenager, Steven Crowder started off in the performing arts as an actor and a comedian. He performed in many national competitions with great success. As he got older he realized that his “politically incorrect” humor would resonate with and get laughs from many on the internet.

Crowder saw an opportunity as the political climate was starting to resemble Hollywood more and more and he started a political comedy show on Youtube. He called his show “Lowder with Crowder” which is a weekly show where he discusses the current political climate mixed with jesting humor.

Louder with Crowder became extremely successful as one of the most popular conservative channels on youtube, which was able to be monetized. On top of youtube monetization, Steven created a “mug club” which is a subscription to view unique content and receive other special perks such as a Louder with Crowder mug, hence the name.

Since Crowder’s launch of Louder with Crowder, he has started a segment on his youtube channel called “Change My Mind” where he goes into public locations such as universities or in front of the White House. In this segment he asks presents an idea and asks the public to convince him to change his mind on said idea. This has sky-rocketed his popularity to the point where even if someone doesn’t support his ideologies, they’ve probably still heard of him.

Crowder has time and time again navigated murky water to improve his entrepreneurial endeavors and continue his ventures in comedy and politics.

Lilly Singh

One of the most recognizable faces on the internet these days, Lilly Singh first got her start on YouTube under the name, IISuperwomanII.  Her story really begins after she graduated from York University with a degree in Psychology.  She has since stated in YouTube videos that after her graduation, she struggled with depression.  When she started making videos later in 2010, she found it to be a therapeutic outlet.  According to Lilly, she chose the name “Superwoman” because that’s what she called herself when she was younger when she “wanted to deal with life’s obstacles like a hero.”

Her channel soon took off and her tomboy, down-to-earth personality became her staple.  As her fanbase grew, so did recognition of her “catchphrase” and signature red lipstick, so in 2016, she launched her own lipstick line called “Bawse.”  The next year, she released her first book, How to be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life, for which she went on tour for a few months later on in 2017.

Lilly has always made sure to stay connected to her audience, going on tour in 2015 (for her documentary, A Trip to Unicorn Island) and in 2017 (book tour), filming daily vlogs on her second channel, and regularly having live-streams where fans can ask her questions.

Her success is likely due to her unique style, but also her constantly trying something new besides just YouTube videos.  Just this past March, it was announced that Lilly will host her own late-night talk show, A Little Late with Lilly Singh, which premiered this September.

In just nine years, Lilly went from a depressed college grad to touring the world, having her own lipstick brand, writing a book, achieving 14.9 million subscribers, and hosting her own show on NBC.  With the help of the internet, Lilly Singh branded and marketed her signature personality to the world.

Tati Westbrook & James Charles

Recently on the internet, there has been some conflict going on between two very close friends. Tati Westbrook and James Charles were super close friends and business partners, until James decided to release his own type of product. Tati had her own gummy vitamin line, and it was doing fairly well. In the past few weeks, James had released his own vitamin line that was essentially going against Tati’s product line. This caused the two friends to drift apart, and the whole internet knows about it. This may seem like some “beef” between two friends, but Tati figured out how to make it into MILLIONS of dollars. After James had released his vitamin line, Tati combated her friend James by releasing a YouTube video talking about how bad of a friend he was and how she basically viewed him as a traitor. Here is how Tati had flipped the whole situation into a profit for herself: she basically twisted the whole situation, made James sound like an awful human, and created EMPATHY for herself. People felt extremely bad for Tati, and what better way to support her than to go out and buy her product? Tati’s vitamins costs $40, and she got to advertise them even more in her video about talking down to James. When she did this, many people unsubscribed from James’ YouTube channel and joined Tati’s side. The video that was released obtained nearly 50 million views in a short period of time. If Tati had convinced nearly 1% (a very normal conversion rate, which is about 500,000 customers in this case) of those viewers to buy her product at $40 a pop, it averages out to over $19 million. I agree, this is not the best way to go about this situation, but Tati clearly knew what she was doing to James as well as collecting an insane amount of profit. This could have been handled in a much better, moral way, but people will do a lot of crazy things to make money. Hopefully the situation will be resolved soon so that everything can go back to being somewhat normal. This is an example of how somebody can take conflict between two friends and turn it into a huge sum of money.

Binging with Babish

Andrew Rea is a film school grad, turned self-taught chef, turned YouTube sensation. Currently with over 3.5 million subscribers on YouTube, Andrew and his channel Binging with Babish has taken the site by storm through his artful and accurate recreations of some of the most famous culinary creations throughout film, TV, and video games. The name Binging with Babish comes from the character Oliver Babish from the TV series, The West Wing, one of Rea’s favorite TV series. The channel’s first viral hit that rocketed the series’ popularity and growth was a video in which he recreated The Moistmaker Thanksgiving sandwich from the TV series, Friends.

Rea started in his own humble home, moved to a New York City apartment, and has now recently acquired a studio kitchen/apartment combo in which he and his business partner, Sawyer, work out of. Rea and his series are the perfect embodiment of taking an unsuccessful situation, in this case Rea’s film-making career, and adding a new element, his passion for the food and film worlds, and turning it all into a more than successful career and bright future.

Nelk Boys

Nelk was founded in 2011 by Kyle Forgeard, Jesse Sebastiani, and Lucas Gasparini. Nelk began as a YouTube channel that consisted of prank videos. The first prank video that really blew their brand up was the “Coke Prank on Cops” video. It was launched on January 12th, 2015 and now currently has over 23 million views on YouTube. In this video they purposely got cops to talk to them while Nelk was in their vehicle. They told the cops that they had “coke” in the back of the car and were sorry. When the cops opened the trunk it was actually Coke as in the soda rather than cocaine. This video is still their most popular video to date.

Today not only is Nelk a YouTube channel, but a brand. Near the beginning of 2018, Nelk had to stop posing content on YouTube due to multiple videos being deemed inappropriate by YouTube. According Image result for nelkto YouTube’s policy, if a channel is issued three “strikes” than that channel will be terminated. A “strike” can be given to a channel as a warning for posting inappropriate content. A “strike” can go away after a certain period of time, and in Nelk’s case they had to wait two months. Nelk had received two strikes on two different videos, and were afraid to post any other content, so instead they created their own platform on their own website.

Nelk’s website, fullsend.com, now offers exclusive content to those who purchase a membership. Nelk continues to upload one video a week through YouTube, but also uploads an exclusive video a week on their website. Their website is also where they sell their brand ranging from apparel with their logo to their slogan, “Full Send.” Nelk now has over 2.2 million subscribers on YouTube and is continuing to branch out and grow their brand.

Good Mythical Morning!

Rhett and Link are a huge YouTube sensation today with thousands of dedicated followers and their own merchandise. This comedic duo has been together since first grade and still remain the best of friends now. What started out as their own website in 2005, Rhett and Link made hilarious videos, usually satirical songs that had perfect harmony and humor. However, when YouTube started, their videos became more viewed. In 2007, the duo gained over 800,000 views in just a few months (a feat that is extremely impressive, considering that this was the really early days of YouTube). This video, The Facebook Song, proved to be their most popular video (now at 17 million views today). In addition to them being one of the first viral videos, they also are one of the few channels that has been around for the entirety of YouTube’s life. Another part of their lucrative business is their daily show, Good Mythical Morning, which is a 20 minute long morning talk show filled with crazy food taste tests and lots of competitions.

What makes Rhett and Link such amazing millennial entrepreneurs is their dedication to their customers, and their desire to keep being creative with their skits. Additionally, they have found a way to create something they love and that pays the bills for them and their families. With that in mind, they also have gained a large fan base, giving them the ability to sell merchandise and write books (both of which fly off the internet shelves). All through the process, they remain humble about their success. With their success, they promise to increase their humor and quality, both of which have definitely improved. Rhett and Link truly are national treasures and deserve recognition for all of their hard work. With classic (and mostly clean) humor, they are a joy to watch and laugh at.
