Doherty and Jam

Young entrepreneur Fraser Doherty started making jams with his grandma at the young age of 14. He grew up in Scotland and eventually he would go door to door selling jams to his neighbors. Then he expanded by selling his jams at the local farmers market and biking to his customers to deliver his orders. He began to receive more orders than he could handle. So he dropped out of his high school and began renting a factory on occasion to meet demand. As word continued to spread, high end supermarket Waitrose approached Doherty and ultimately his jam ended up on their shelves. Eventually Doherty went global and by 2019 he sold his 5 millionth jar of jam. This story follows how even something so small can grow into something big and successful through hard-work and dedication. Doherty shows how entrepreneurs do not necessarily have to come up with something new, they can do something that’s been around in a new way. This way of thinking can lead to big things in the business world.

Italian Graphic Design Entrepreneur

Do you ever wonder how you can make your social media look appealing?

Antia D’Alisera is not merely a successful YouTuber. Born in Rome Italy, and now a freshman at Kings College in London, she was raised by her father who is a movie producer and her mother who is an interior designer in Rome. Her older sister recently graduated from Parsons School of Design for fashion. Anita is surrounded by excellent taste and a beautiful eye for aesthetics. While on vacation, Anita and her family frequently travel to their house on an island off of Greece called Patmos. From growing up surrounded by her parents and sister’s excellent taste in style, art, and design, Anita has found a passion and deep interest for graphic designs, film, beauty and exquisite aesthetics. She is gifted with ideaphoria and can easily put her ideas into practice, since she currently has her own YouTube channel and her own graphic design business.

Anita D’Alisera, known as AniDali on Youtube (and for all her social media platforms), is currently a content creator for more than 6 years reaching 26.4 thousand subscribers. She is a young entrepreneur since she gets paid by YouTube, and also started her own graphic design business in 2020. The purpose of her business is to help Youtubers create aesthetic intro, outro, and banner templates for their Youtube channel. She customizes people’s needs based on what their YouTube channel is about and her prices are very affordable. There is a demand for having YouTube channels be pleasing, since the more the effort in regards to how one’s presentation looks the more people will subscribe to it. This is understandable and what a person says in their videos matters as well.

On the Fiverr website, an online marketplace for freelancers, Anita mentions that in addition to helping YouTubers create graphic designs, she customizes beautiful templates for clients’ social media as well. Anita has an entrepreneurial mindset because she realizes that not everyone is a YouTuber so she has branched out to help people make their other social media platforms look attractive and beautiful. Anita’s talent for design at her young age promises a lifetime of inspiration to create beauty and make it known.

Floral Farm

Have you ever wanted to create your own flower bouquets?

Camden Kidwell is the leading example of a young entrepreneur. He is a recent homeschool high school graduate and instead of going to college this fall he took the entire spring and summer to create his own flower farm and bouquet business. He started Swallowdale Flowers in June of 2021, and named the business after swallows which nest in his family’s barn. Swallowdale Flowers is unlike any florist business due to the fact that the customers can walk around Camden’s garden and create their own bouquets using his flowers. He has provided his customers with the ability for them to customize their own bouquets, which is unlike any other flower farm or floral business since the vast majority offers only premade bouquet arrangements. He does make bouquets though, on a weekly basis which he sells at 6ixNorth, a local artisanal craft store in his hometown. Another unique feature is that he runs his business from home – outside – where customers can be in nature and experience what it is like to be on a farm.

Additionally, Camden has recently been asked by a local event planning company to collaborate with them on a wedding. An acquaintance asked Camden to make a corsage for his homecoming date at the local high school. Camden continues to grow his business and network through his community. He is an example of why one does not need to earn a degree to become an entrepreneur. Swallowdale Flowers is the definition of a startup business, because he never received any help beyond that from his father. Camden Kidwell’s story shows us that all it takes to become an entrepreneur is a willingness to be disciplined, take risks and have an imagination. He is an inspiration and a role-model.

Live Original

Every young adult has had to go through the uncomfortable social transition from child to adult. Sadie Robertson did so when she was seventeen and was thrust into the spotlight after being named runner up on ABC’s Dancing with The Stars in 2014.  Her last name, better known for the creation of Duck Commanders created by her grandfather in the 1970’s and still run by her family, was what drew attention to her at a very young age. Although the fame and glitz and paparazzi were exciting, Sadie realized how unknown the real her truly was to the world that thought they knew everything about her. She wanted to find a way to show the world her true self while also encouraging other young girls to do the same, and realized that the fame that seemed like a burden was actually an opportunity.

Live Original started with just encouraging and inspirational captions that Robertson would post to her millions of followers, and eventually snowballed into a full-time business and ministry. In 2016, Robertson did a 16-city tour called “Live Original Live” where she became more widely known as a motivational and inspirational speaker. Live Original also expanded into an online shop where girls can purchase clothing, stickers, and accessories with messages promoting fearlessness in living original. Her book and memoir, Live Original: How the Duck Commander Teen Keeps it Real and Stays True to her Values, came out in 2017 and has already made it on the New York Time’s Bestseller list.

Sadie, now 21, continues to post on social media, but has included more in depth studies in living fearlessly on her blog, Live Original, and podcast, Whoa That’s Good. She also partners with other companies with similar values through her site. Live Original Live will be going back on tour again soon and Sadie’s new book and sequel to her 2017 top-seller, Live Fearless: A Call to Power, Passion, and Purpose, was released in February of this year. She is promoting authenticity and fearlessness by living it out herself and not being ashamed to share the truth of the Gospel. She believes that Christ made each person with a unique purpose and calling and has created a business around her ministry of encouraging and inspiring other girls to live out their calling. Sadie Robertson is creating an impact in the lives of young women all over the world, one post, podcast, chapter, and speech at a time.

Are You Thinking of the Children?

Alain Nteff was, and he was thinking about the mothers too when he created his lifesaving app Gifted Mom.

In 2012, at a twenty years of age, Alain Nteff visited a rural hospital to see his friend Conrad Tankou at a medical practice. At this hospital, Nteff was shocked to learn about the high number of deaths of both mothers and children during the process of birth. Many of these tragedies would be preventable with proper antenatal care. Both Nteff and Tankou set out to see how they could to minimize this affliction in their community.

“The problem of maternal and infant death is not a woman issue — it’s a humanitarian issue. Everybody should take seriously. We all have mothers, we all have sisters, and it’s not just a problem for women or girls.” – Alain Nteff

Nteff and Tankou’s part in solving this problem is an app called Gifted Mom. Gifted Mom offers the following services to women in Cameroon and Nigeria:

– Weekly Antenatal care guide and notifications for pregnant women.
– Vaccination guide and notifications for mothers with children under 5 years.
– Breastfeeding guide for mothers and Career Women.
– Pregnancy Calculator for calculating the expected date of delivery.
– Guide for first time pregnancy and teenage mothers
– Send your concerns to a Doctor and get instant reply.
– Journal your journey

This is a free app and the information it offers is crucial in minimizing unnecessary deaths of mothers and children. If moms have a question, all they have to do is text it to Gifted Mom and they will receive immediate, reliable information. This app also tracks vaccinations in an effort to minimize the 4,000 deaths babies suffer from vaccine-preventable diseases. So far 13,300 mothers and children have been registered through this app. That day trip to the hospital turned into a project that’s give life and hope to many.

Hart Main- ManCans

You don’t have to have made huge strides to be considered an entrepreneur.  This is why I find Hart Main’s story not only amusingly adorable, but also inspirational for all young kids (and adults) with creative minds. Hart is a 14-year old that came up with the idea of manly scented candles, which he has wittingly branded as ManCans.

He came up with this idea when he was teasing his sister about the “girly scented” candles she was selling for a school fundraiser. Hart wanted to take a spin on the average candle and direct it at a different than normal audience, men.  Although his family didn’t expect him to pursue the manly scented candles idea himself, he did. Hart’s idea has since turned into a nationwide success.

He put in an initial investment of $100, his parents put in $200, and together they all worked on developing the candles. Some of the available scents include: Campfire, Bacon, Sawdust, Fresh Cut Grass, Grandpa’s Pipe and more. Currently, ManCans’ candles are in over 60 stores across the country and have sold about 9,000 units. Hart plans to stick with selling ManCans’ inventory until he has to shift his focus back into school, he is only 14 after all.

Hart Main specifically inspires me in the way that he views entrepreneurship and innovation.  He saw the smallest gap in a market and jumped at the opportunity to fill it.  This is a view that I believe more entrepreneurs should put into use: whatever our dreams, ideas or projects, if we plant a seed, from that small thing comes fruit greater than we could imagine.

It’s Really Quite Pinteresting

Co-founded in 2010, Pinterest is a relatively new company that revolutionized the discovery aspect of social media. With 176 million registered users, it’s clear that millennial founders Ben Silbermann, Evan Sharp, and Paul Sciarra (aka Cold Brew Labs) had a stellar idea in the concept of Pinterest.

Pinterest is a visually-driven website that allows users to collect and sort ideas, articles, pictures, and other inspirations. Every “pin” is a photo, and if you like what you see, you can double click to see the pin’s origin or click the repin button to save it to one of your boards. It’s like a virtual scrapbook or file folder- but beautifully designed and much simpler. Additionally, users can add their own content to the site to share their own ideas and work.

screen-shot-2016-10-18-at-3-38-40-pm

This wildly successful site was the phoenix that rose out of the founder’s previous app failure, Tote. Part of the reason Tote failed was people hadn’t really begun shopping through apps yet; the main way people used the app was to send product images to themselves. They were image collecting. The recognition of this behavioral trend was the key for Cold Brew Labs’ next innovation. They took this new insight and transferred it over to the web to avoid one of the big potholes Tote had, and voila, Pinterest was born. Its monstrous success is a testament to what can happen when failure is looked at as a learning experience rather than defeat.

Although some have call Pinterest’s CEO somewhat “socially awkward,” it’s clear that his creation is a work of social genius.
