Cary Huang, a Mind Behind Battle for Dream Island

Cary K Huang is a creator whose journey started sooner that most would expect. Cary, in collaboration with his twin brother Michael, created an animated web series called Battle for Dream Island. Their first entry in this series, “BFDI 1a: Take the Plunge”  was released to YouTube, beginning the story of the original twenty living objects and the host and establishing that the contestants would battle to win a beautiful island. It did not receive a wide viewership at first, as it was through the steady persistence of their uploads that their audience would grow. Cary and Michael were twelve when the first episode was released on the first day of 2010, and over the course of exactly two years and twenty-four episodes totaling nearly four hours of animation, they gained more than a thousand subscribers.

The fans of Battle for Dream Island and a similar YouTube show known as Inanimate Insanity would come to be called the Object Show Community. This online community, as is the case with others like it on the net, produces large amounts of fan made content. Some may consider the OSC, especially as it exists today, to be a self-sustaining vortex of inspiration, animation, and creativity.

The brothers’ journey in online animation had a good early chapter. It was followed by several false starts in the form of sequel seasons that did not get far off the ground. Through most of his time in high school and college education at Stanford, Cary was too busy to focus on animation. During this time, he was able to experiment with code in some interesting projects. It was not until a flurry of new episodes releasing in 2017 and 2018 that Battle for Dream Island was ready to return, this time with a far larger production team and renewed art style. Following a hiatus that can be attributed to a lack of time at the end of Cary’s college career, Battle for BFDI (aka. BFB) was able to release episodes regularly until it reached its conclusion.

The BFDI team is still active today, and is currently producing the prequel season Battle for Dream Island Again and the sequel season The Power of Two simultaneously. Each new animated episode receives millions of views. Though the world and the scope of their creation has expanded greatly, Cary and Michael’s original vision from when they were twelve years old still persists in their modern efforts.

Pixel To Persona: Safiya Nygaard

Safiya Nygaard is a very successful American Youtuber from Chicago, Illinois. She attended Standford University, studying English and Drama. She quickly noticed her love for production and began working for BuzzFeed in 2015. She started her career at BuzzFeed creating the popular show called Ladylike with a few others. After she left BuzzFeed she was able to put more effort into her own YouTube channel. She has gained over 10 million subscribers since she started posting on her channel in 2017.

Collabs, New Brand, and Other Opportunities:

YouTubers certainly are entrepreneurs but not what some people would think. YouTubers advertise content and as they come into their “voice” that then turns into a brand and this has been successful for many YouTubers including Safiya. Safiya has been able to be a part of many great projects and opportunities. Some of these projects include creating a lipstick collection with popular makeup brand: ColourPop. Aswell as collaborating with fellow YouTuber Cristine Rotenberg AKA Simplynailogical with a limited-edition collection of nail polish from Cristine’s brand Holo Taco. Safiya also owns her own apparel brand called Fiendish Behavior which is a perfect embodiment of who she is. She has added her makeup experiments to her hoodies, t-shirts, stickers, tote bags, blankets, and sweats. Safiya would call her clothing style as “comfortable vampire” which means wearing all black in comfortable styles and textures.

She is known for her series called “Bad Beauty Science” which essentially means mixing large amounts of a single type of products and creating a “Franken” etc (She has mixed almost every type of makeup product together).  This has iterated into many off shoots of channel topics. She loves testing “Weird Fashion” such as Platform Crocs, 9-foot-long jeans and many many more. Recently she has moved into showcasing her cool travel opportunities with her husband also fellow YouTuber Tyler Williams. They have visited an underwater hotel, slept in an Igloo, slept in a Japanese Capsule Hotel, and again many other places. As a fellow viewer and subscriber, I like to say she is an investigative channel of weird things but weird is a good thing because that makes the content very interesting. I found her channel in 2018 so I have been a loyal lover of her content for 7 years and still enjoy every aspect of her videos. One other detail I would like to mention is when she has a video idea she will do whatever it takes to complete it just because she is that interested in the topic. Some of my favorite longer more deep dive type videos include, “I Stayed At Every Hotel On The Vegas Strip”, “I Ate At Every Celebrity Chef’s Restaurant On The Vegas Strip”, and “I Got An 18th Century Makeover” just to name a few. In her 18th Century Makeover video she got the opportunity to live out her childhood dreams and visit Colonial Williamsburg and get to wear 18th century attire and get to participate in activities there. In her earlier videos she would mention how she wanted to go to Colonial Williamsburg and now she finally got to go. It was really cool for me as a fan to see her get to visit a place she always talks about, and I was very invested in videos like these.

Conclusion:

These videos take a lot of time, planning, and funding. I am amazed at the work that is put into these videos from Safiya, Tyler and their team. Both of them are also relatively young being 32 and 33 years old. They all have been working very hard on this channel and brand since they graduated college. As a long story short I really wanted to showcase at least one YouTuber in the blog post agenda and I think it is a very interesting type on Entrepreneur to research.

Bringing the World Together with Coffee

The Climb

Francois Reihani is someone I think needs more light shead on his amazing companies. Francois is a child of imigrant parents from France and they moved around many times from, Mexico, to LA, to finally Dallas. Francois has been working for most of his life, his dad had a heart attack which meant he and his sister had to step up to help with providing for the home. He started as a car salesman and become the highest seller on the west coast that year at just eighteen years old. Francois went to college and had many dreams about becoming an entrepreneur. This turned into opening a restaurant, which was named Pok, a poke bowl restaurant, with the help of partners. He sold his shares and set his mind on opening The Brightside Project which is apart of the La La Land Kind café.

What it is

The café is designed to help teens that have aged out of the foster system learn valuable life skills and internship opportunities. It may look like a simple coffee barista job from the outside but they are actually learning the in’s and out’s of customer service training, mentorship opportunities and much more. The internship lasts 8 weeks and at the end of it, the participants are helped with job placement, housing, schooling, and therapy.

Name Origin

La La Land Kind Café instantly caught my attention due to its name. Francois mentioned he was looking at his life in his young twenties and he said he hated the person he has become. This is when he decided to change his life completely and start the La La Land Kind Café. Although it sounds like it is associated with the musical romantic comedy La La Land, it technically has nothing to do with it. The meaning behind the name is that it is a place where you can go and feel a true sense of joy for life. I think he took inspiration from the plot of La La Land as that movie is very whimsical and shows real dreams in action. I think this calls back to Francois’ life very well as he was so sucessful almost as if he was dreaming up how his career would go but in reality he made it come true. He continues to make dreams come true every single day.

Kane Parsons, a Filmmaker Fresh out of High School

A pair of images, one showing Kane Parsons, a young man. The other showing the original Backrooms image of a hall with its musty old carpet and aging wallpaper.

Kane Parsons and the original Backrooms photograph.

Kane Parsons is an online filmmaker and visual effects artist who has received viral attention for his horror short films. His most popular work is a series called The Backrooms. Parsons, who goes by Kane Pixels online, released the first installment in his Backrooms series when he was sixteen years old. The nine minute short film which was uploaded to YouTube in 2022 takes place in an unnatural, lonely setting. The protagonist wanders endless, maze-like yellow hallways rendered in vivid detail with the 3D animation software Blender. This protagonist, whose handheld camera serves as our viewpoint for the film, entered this strange world by falling straight through the solid ground beneath him and into a place disconnected from our reality. In the days following the suspenseful short’s release, it would become highly popular in several online spaces. It was inspired by a post on a message board from 2019, one which described the original concept of the endless Backrooms, and featured the iconic photograph most associated with the uncanny dimension. The series expanded on the concepts first established in that post, and would only receive more notoriety as it went on, trending with each new entry in its ongoing narrative. As Kane Parsons continued to thoughtfully produce the visuals of the films, he grew more and more ambitious. The digital sets only became larger and more detailed, and later entries would use advanced motion capture techniques to make characters’ movements as realistic as possible.

All of the impressive work that Parsons was doing got him the attention of more than just online horror fans. The independent movie studio A24 has chosen to adapt his series into a feature film. Kane Parsons will direct the film, and it is to be written by Robert Patino, a producer and writer whose previous work includes the HBO series Westworld. While simultaneously completing high school, Parsons was able to build a unique online identity and inspire others with his fresh take on the found footage horror subgenre. He is quoted by ABC News as saying, “I just love doing this, I somehow almost never burn out. And I think that’s partially because of how much people love this series. It just feels like everything I do has value.”

I can say personally that the stories Kane Pixels has created have fascinated and transfixed me. I am reminded, as I climb to the third floor of a furniture store, of those windowless carpeted halls. I find myself wondering, “What would I do if I found myself in an infinite IKEA, or an endless airport?” The success of The Backrooms has shown me that if an idea intrigues me and has the sticking power to hold in my brain, it is likely that other people will have similar reactions to it. If I can unearth a novel idea and put in the time and effort to build upon it, I can make something people will care about.

Max Reisinger: 17 & Living a Dream

Max Reisinger is a 17-year-old from Chapel Hill, North Carolina who is living a life that many teens and adults alike wish they were: one of YouTube and social media fame and successful business ownership. Reisinger currently has over 250,000 YouTube subscribers and nearly 13 million total views on his channel, as well as his own clothing brand, Perspectopia, which is a combination of the words “perspective” and “utopia” and is the basis for what his brand as a whole strives for.

Max’s YouTube channel was the beginning of his career as an entrepreneur and continues to be an integral part of his brand and internet presence. Max’s family lived in France for 7 months while his mother, a French professor, was on sabbatical there; his documentation of parts of this experience, along with his filming and editing skills led to his first big break on YouTube. In May of 2019, his video titled “A Day in the Life at FRENCH PUBLIC SCHOOL” would eventually reach just over 2 million views. His next most viewed video is about his experience coming back to America, in which he describes the “reverse culture shock” felt and provides an overall reflection on his time in France. This uncommon life-experience intrigued many and allowed Max’s talents and personality to shine and made the important initial strides in his YouTube career.

Now, Max mainly uploads vlogs about his life and topics teens and the surrounding demographic can relate to, including videos about his first college visit, time management, or just his average day. Also, he receives paid sponsorships and an overflow of positive comments on his videos as to how he is a true inspiration to his viewers. Max has a joy for life and a unique personality that is entertaining and well-reflected in his skillfully-edited videos — all of which attract new viewers and subscribers every day.

But Max did not stop with YouTube: he wanted to build his brand as an individual and to create a community in which different perspectives and experiences could be brought together in order to support one another and aim for a better tomorrow. Thus, in 2019 he launched the aforementioned Perspectopia. Specializing in embroidered Champion crewnecks, the site also includes t-shirts and various accessories like bucket hats, socks, and stickers, all of which Max designs, makes, and ships from his bedroom. Though still a high school student, brother, son, and friend, Max is a champion of productivity (something he frequently gives tips about on his YouTube and Instagram) and manages to work on his business endeavors for an average of 80-90 hours per week.

Keeping with the brand’s message, Max created an online discussion forum connected with Perspectopia on the popular platform Discord, so that people from anywhere in the world can discuss their lives with and support one another in the context of his brand. Currently, Perspectopia is donating over half of its profits to a Filipino community recovering from a recent typhoon, where a member of the Discord server lives. Perspectopia has been successful thus far because Max has created a brand that is not only original in design and well-made, but is also based on a mission felt by many and appeals to the ethos of a person; by buying his products, his customers can be a part of something greater — whether that be helping those in need, or just embodying the message of trying to continually improve our world.

Overall, Max Reisinger is an excellent representation of what a young entrepreneur looks like, and is perhaps one of the most realistic examples of such because, after watching his videos, he is seen to be a genuine, hard-working person chasing his dream. The combination of Max’s unique and high-quality YouTube and clothing brand with his commitment to making the world a better place is what has made him a success and inspiration thus far.

Steven Crowder – The Conservative Canadian-American

Image result for steven crowderAs a teenager, Steven Crowder started off in the performing arts as an actor and a comedian. He performed in many national competitions with great success. As he got older he realized that his “politically incorrect” humor would resonate with and get laughs from many on the internet.

Crowder saw an opportunity as the political climate was starting to resemble Hollywood more and more and he started a political comedy show on Youtube. He called his show “Lowder with Crowder” which is a weekly show where he discusses the current political climate mixed with jesting humor.

Louder with Crowder became extremely successful as one of the most popular conservative channels on youtube, which was able to be monetized. On top of youtube monetization, Steven created a “mug club” which is a subscription to view unique content and receive other special perks such as a Louder with Crowder mug, hence the name.

Since Crowder’s launch of Louder with Crowder, he has started a segment on his youtube channel called “Change My Mind” where he goes into public locations such as universities or in front of the White House. In this segment he asks presents an idea and asks the public to convince him to change his mind on said idea. This has sky-rocketed his popularity to the point where even if someone doesn’t support his ideologies, they’ve probably still heard of him.

Crowder has time and time again navigated murky water to improve his entrepreneurial endeavors and continue his ventures in comedy and politics.

Candela Cosmetics

Erin Alessandra Jung is the 19-year-old mastermind behind the beauty brand “Candela Cosmetics” which is currently expanding from its flagship store in Singapore to the California market.

Erin’s passion for beauty and interest in makeup began when she was just 10 years old. She started a channel at this tender age, but even further challenged age expectations when she started her own cosmetics business at just 17. The inspiration for Erin’s brand was a simple one– personal motivation drove her to recognize and meet a gap in the market. Erin found herself disappointed by the lack of options for her own sensitive skin and decided to take a leap of faith and make her own product.
Erin faced a lot of backlash because of the fact that she was a young woman looking to make it big in the cutthroat world of entrepreneurship in the risky cosmetics market.
Despite everything against her, Erin seems learned on the ins and outs of starting a business– she learned the hard way that you cannot do everything yourself and now has learned to delegate.
She also offered advice to other young entrepreneurs starting out, “Don’t let your fear of failure hinder your progress!”
She is also a driven young woman outside of Candela Cosmetics, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in economics and chemistry. Erin’s determinism and ambition are inspiring to the typical college student– she does college while also helming a successful business!

The College Students who Created a Sports Entertainment Empire

See the source image    When thinking about the type of person who would be coined with he term “entrepreneur”, one might envision a well-dressed, business-professional man or woman in a skyrise. While this is true in many instances, there are numerous examples of uncommon people starting uncommonly successful businesses. One prime example of this are the young entrepreneurs who began the sports entertainment dynasty that is Dude Perfect. The co-founders of Dude Perfect, at the time it began, college roommates at Texas A&M University. They created a “trick shot” video out of a backyard and it was an instant hit on YouTube, gathering an impressive 200,000 views over just one week. After this success, the group began to produce more exciting, more impressive videos of seemingly impossible trick shots.

See the source image

Through the incredible dedication of the cofounders, they edited the videos by themselves until they have the resources to outsource a full-time producer and editor. They began designing and selling online merchandise through their website and releasing iPhone applications that were downloaded by millions. I have heard two of the cofounders, (Cory and Koby Cotton) speak on how difficult it was to get Dude Perfect off the ground, and they shared how many trials they had to overcome such as low resources, sleep deprivation, and even facial paralysis. Present day, this sports phenomenon is worth more than $10 Million and that number keeps growing significantly. They are currently the seventh most subscribed YouTube channel (36 million) and have accumulated more than 7 billion views. They have worked with celebrities such as Serena Williams, Russel Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, Chris Paul, and Drew Brees. The cofounders of Dude Perfect have created a sports dynasty that is enjoyed by millions and are changing the way we think of sports entertainment all while having the time of their lives.

Hank Green

YouTube is one of the fastest growing social media sites of the day. Leveraging ideas, advertising products, drawing attention to specific topics, and educating/entertaining the general public are just a few of its vast uses. There are those who know how to take full advantage of YouTube, and one of those people is Hank Green.

Now, I know what most of you are thinking, “Spencer, being YouTube famous does NOT make you an Millennial Entrepreneur.” To that I say, yes, you are probably right. However, YouTube is a cultural hub of knowledge, and people that can give birth to many great ideas.

Hank Green is an entrepreneur for many reasons. I say that not because he is a YouTube star, but rather because of how he uses the resources available to him, ie: The Internet. Hank shares a YouTube channel with his brother- bestselling author John Green (The Fault In Our Stars)- as well as 2 other educational YouTube channels. He also owns a record label for upstarting artists, a blog about ideas to help the planet, and a charity-oriented project that used to promote charities but now actually raises money for them. But there’s more.

Ever heard of VidCon? well, if you haven’t, VidCon is a multi-genre online video convention, held annually in southern California since 2010, all started by Hank Green and organized alongside a team, of course. VidCon is the biggest event of its kind and has since its conception grown from approximately one thousand to over 18 thousand attendees.

But what makes an entrepreneur an entrepreneur? Problem solving, right? Well, hank covered that too. In 2010 after seeing a 3-D movie with his wife, she complained that she had a headache due to the glasses. Knowing what he did about 3-D movies and how they work, Hank proceeded to create 2-D glasses; a product that “takes the headache out of 3-D.” he now sells the glasses on www.2d-glasses.com

Hank uses his intelligence, abilities, and resources to help people, solve problems, and provide for the audience that he has accumulated. At 33 years old, He’s right on the edge of the generational line dividing baby-boomers and millennials, but without a doubt prefers to be in the lives of the young, aiding their search for knowledge and showing how anyone can come up with great ideas.
